Mr. and Mrs. Matthews Go To Bend:

Yesterday, we woke up thinking that we would be going to the dump and working in the back yard.  Boy, were we wrong!  We figured out something much more fun to do instead.  Downtown Bend was having a car show, so we hopped into our own and headed toward it.

First we went to Corey's and had a hamburger.

Then, we walked to Drake Park, on the lovely Deschutes River.

At the far end of the park, there were hundreds and hundreds of classic cars.  It was so fun.  Everybody was so cheerful and friendly.  The cars were pretty, the sun was warm, and it was a super nice way to spend the afternoon.

Cary admires a beautiful Ford Fairlane.
He used to have one like it.

When we were in high school, my BFF Keri had a yellow Mustang much like this one.

This car is named Merlot, and has the most beautiful deep purple paint job.  I just knew that I needed to get my picture taken with it!

Cary spotted the car-wash saleslady and just knew that he had to get his picture taken with her.  She told me that I was a really nice wife to let him do that.  I said, I know, and thanks for letting us take your picture.  As we walked away, I asked him how come he gets his picture taken with Jerry Rice and the car-wash saleslady, and I think I'm doing good to get mine taken with a car named Merlot?  I guess it is because he asks!

We walked around there for quite a while.  I made a slide show of many of the cars, which is at the bottom of this post.  Here are a few more:

The woman who owns this beauty lives in Centralia.  She said that even though she lives there, she hasn't been to The Olympic Club yet.  I told her that she would love it!

We walked back to town.  Bend has some really cool old houses, such as this:

We had some time to kill before they started their cruise, or dragging the gut as us old fogies used to call it.  So, we decided to go to a movie; something that we haven't done for several years.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0409847/

We decided to see Cowboys and Aliens.  We used our movie gift certificate that we had been carrying around for a couple of years.  Thank goodness it was for $25.00!  $7.75 each to get in, $8.00 for popcorn, $4.75 for a pop, $5.25 for a bottled water.  We still pitched in $8.00 of our our money!  We enjoyed the movie, but Cary said that we could have waited to watch this one on video.  It was good, but somehow kind of predictable.

Returning to the downtown area, we enjoyed the cruise and visited with some old friends.

Then we ended our awesome day by coming home and watching the Mariners win over the Angels at 5-1.  It doesn't get no better than that!  I hope that you guys had a wonderful day too.

Take care,
Kathy M.

  1. Now that beats going to the dump by a mile. I love old cars and used to take my restored VW Bug to shows. It was a real codger magnet.
You certainly were sweet to Gary to let him snuggle with her but you had to feel better knowing that her's weren't real. Do guys even care? :))

My brother's BFF bought a Dodge Viper to attract the chicks and mostly just got guys googling his car, lol.

  4. What a gorgeous day to be outside doing something fun!! And not at the dump! I love old car shows, too. You're a good sport about Cary and the "model"! I would do the same thing, though. I also loved the photo of the water and trees at the beginning...beautiful!

  7. Hi Kathy, Sounds like you had a great day--wise choice choosing to go to Bend rather than work in the yard. I love Classic Car Shows-fun to see those cars from back when I was little. You could actually identify them back then. Today, I can't tell whether it is a Lexus or a Honda from the body shape and style. Yes, the San Diego Zoo is amazing--so well planned out and BIG trees everywhere. I'm thinking your Grandson is ready to head off to school soon--give me an update when you have time. Have a great week. Mickie :)

  8. Kathy! You and Cary had such a great day! I thought my day yesterday of going to the movies was great, but your day was a car show and a movie too! That car show looked like so much fun, seeing all the beautiful old cars. Man, your camera is great and you are such a wonderful photographer. You really should try selling some of your photos to magazines. Glad to hear you had such a fantastic day. One complaint: You missed ONE photo... a picture of your hamburger at Corey's!!!!!! LOL! You know how much I love seeing pictures of FOOD!!!!!!!!!!!! ;)
    Best,
    Gloria
P.S. Take Cary to see RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES!!

  9. Hi, I'm back! A few more things: I forgot to say, that was SO FUNNY, the pic of Cary with that girl! Really cute! And I just watched your slide show... what gorgeous photos you have Kathy. Did you ever think of contacting a car magazine to see if they might buy your photos? OR, write an article on this show and try to sell it, along with the photos! And, one more question: the ENGINES on these cars are so immaculate! Do you know if the people DRIVE the cars to the location, or are they towed??? Are any of these cars even driven for pleasure? Or are they kept just for show?

  12. Gloria, some are driven, but some are towed inside some pretty fancy trailers. They are clean, that is for sure.
