On Sunday, Cary and I went on a drive. I can't believe that though we have passed the turnout for the Ogden Group Camp hundreds of times, we had never turned in and drove the half mile to a huge dirt parking lot. That parking lot happens to be the trail-head that will eventually take you up to Paulina Lake. Heading downstream, Paulina Creek will end up feeding into the Little Deschutes River.

There is a nice little wading area at Paulina Creek for the kids, or for fishing. Cary saw a big trout in the clear and cold water when we were there.

Just cross the bridge by foot, horse or mountain bike and keep going. We haven't done it yet, but around 3.5 miles upstream (it sounds like at about one mile past McKay Crossing Campground) there is a rock-slide swimming area. Though you can ride your bike uphill, you will need to take an alternate route downhill. The guide sites tell us that there is a parallel path for this purpose.

It was just so pretty. I want to go back next summer and take this hike up to the water slides. This spot is very easy to find. From Bend, head south until you get to the Newberry Caldera sign. Turn left on Paulina Lake Road. Drive towards the mountain for a couple of miles, until you notice Paulina Creek. Turn left at the bridge and wind your way back to the parking lot.

So, who was Peter Skene Ogden? Here are a few facts about this old fur trader/explorer ... said to be the first white guy to find Paulina Lake:

Peter Skene Ogden was born in 1794, in Quebec. He died in 1854, and is buried in Oregon City. Mr. Ogden was a fur trader and an explorer. On his travels across America and British Columbia, he discovered many places, including the Central Oregon area. Some reports tell us that he was a rather violent person, and his company transferred him to avoid murder charges on at least one occasion. Still, he got a lot done, was brave and smart, rescued people from massacres and he is honored for his work. Ogden, Utah was named after this man.

Hi Patti, I know isn't that weird? But if he had been hung or rotted in jail he wouldn't have discovered all that he did. Others surely had been to the places that he had, but they didn't document it and get everything organized. You are right, we do have lots of pretty places close by.
