Book Blurb Friday #58: "Night Antics"

Oregon Gifts of Comfort and Joy ~ Kathy Matthews

 "Night Antics"
by Kathy Matthews

It was a cold winter evening and the alien child took the form of a cloud.  She used the moon as her nose as she looked down on the yard in rural Central Oregon.

Gazing west, she spotted a coyote heading towards the front porch, in search of cat food.  An owl called out in greeting, softly hooting.  A man in dark clothing was quietly walking down the road in front of the house, stopping when he noticed the coyote.  The coyote's ears perked up as he sniffed the air and turned to stare at the man.

The guy who lived in the house chose that very moment to turn on the porch-light as he opened the door to go out for a cigarette.  The coyote ran away, the dark man froze to avoid being spotted, and the alien child laughed at the scene before her.  (146)

Thank you, Lisa, for choosing one of my pictures for the prompt this week! I'm not sure that I have enough there for a book, but it was a fun little story to write.

I am participating in Lisa's Book Blurb Friday, from over at Writing in the Buff.   It is fun, and you can play too!  Pretend that the picture on the top of this post is the cover of a book.  On the inside jacket, you have 150 words to entice the reader to buy your book.  Lisa gives us a week to think about next week's entry (she's gracious like that).  Please CLICK HERE on Friday to read what everybody else wrote.  To see my other BBF stories, please locate them on the left hand sidebar under the Book Blurb Friday button.

  1. Wow--you created several haunting pictures for me. One in the already hauntingly beautiful photograph, and one in that hushed little scene you created! And who is the bad guy?? Love love love this!

  2. Please don't stop now. You really hooked me in with this blurb, raising far more questions than answers. You would be reeling in buckets of readers with this one.

  3. You hooked me with the first sentence. I love the idea that the alien is a child who can shift change into something like a cloud. Terrific premise for a story.

  4. Nice job Kathy. Although I haven't been playing BBF, your picture was beautiful and so I had to read yours and a few others. Just love this photo.

I sincerely appreciate your comments! If you don't see your comment posted immediately, don't worry. I have comment moderation on here to help filter out spam. It will become visible as soon as I read it, and I do that several times daily. It just seems easier than using the word verification option. I am so sorry, but I am not accepting anonymous comments at this time. You can email me at: oregongiftsofcomfortandjoy@hotmail.com and I will happily add your comment to this post. Thank you so much! ~ Kathy M.
