There's No Place Like Home:

In the very near future, we will be going to Kansas to watch some great football!  We live in Oregon, which is second from the top on the far left (OR).  Kansas is highlighted in red on the map below. 




I have never been to Kansas before.  I have been up and down the West Coast, the upper East Coast, and the Gulf Coast.  I have been to upstate New York, Arkansas, Idaho, Nevada, Arizona, Oklahoma and Texas, but am still missing a bunch of the middle states.  Now, my chance has come to go to Kansas for a couple of days.  Yay!

Besides reminding me of our family in Kansas, Kansas reminds me of tornadoes.  Because Kansas is tornado country.  True story.


I don't know if the Wizard of Oz was based on the weather in the state of Kansas, but there sure was a BAD tornado in The Wizard of Oz.  I think that we can all agree on that.  That tornado was one of the worst in movie history, if you ask me.


I love how Dorothy loves Toto.  
Is Toto a Carin Terrier?  Just wondering!

I hate windstorms, thanks so much to the Columbus Day Storm that hit the northwest in 1962 and ruined my birthday party when I was four.  Windstorms suck.  The cause a lot of damage and you cannot do anything about them, really.  And, after all, tornadoes are really just big windstorms.  So, there you go.  I am a LITTLE BIT afraid to go to Kansas, even though I am so looking forward to watching Tyler and Cameron play football and seeing Halie cheer.  I will buck up and be brave and believe that we will not encounter a tornado during our time in Kansas.
 

I have decided that if all else fails and I am surrounded by tornadic activity,  I will just click my Birkenstocks and say, "There's No Place Like Home"  a whole bunch of times, as I pray to Jesus to save our lives. (Since I know that I am really wearing the wrong kind of shoes and that Birkies are not ruby slippers, I will have to repeat the chant more than a mere three times.  It is always good to prepare and have a plan, don't ya think?) 

Hey, if I get brave, I will stay on top of the storm cellar as long as I can to get some really good pictures for you guys, okay?  I won't be gone long, but I'll sure miss you guys!

    Thanks for starting my morning off with a smile! I've been through Kansas only once, nearly two decades ago. I remember three things:

    1. It is flat. Really. Really. Flat.
    2. Lots of farmland.
    3. When a rainstorm moved in at night the lightning show was the most incredible I've ever seen.

    Love the Wizard of Oz! Not sure about Toto, but I think you may be right about him being a Cairn. Cute little fella...

    Hi Kathy...and you, too Lisa! I've been to and driven through Kansas a time or two. Hey, there I go making poetry again! :D
    And Lisa is SO right, as you would know now, since I'm writing this after you're back home...but it is FLAT...and it goes on and on and on when you're driving all the way through the state from east to west, going to the Colorado Rockies! I have so much I'd like to tell you about a certain car trip and the movie Wizard of Oz...guess that'll have to wait for another post of my own!
