A couple of weeks ago, Cary, Mom and I went to Astoria to watch Nigel's graduation ceremony. My friend Gloria, over at The Little Red House with the White Porch, likes to see what and where we eat when we go someplace, so here is the story about that. I hope that you guys like it too!
We left Thursday afternoon and went to the Thurston Papa Murphy's Take and Bake Pizza, to take dinner over to Kari, Kristin and Casey. Papa Murphy's is my very favorite pizza in the whole world. I'm serious. Especially this Chicago style stuffed pizza. It was $16.00, but for an extra dollar I got a 2 liter soda and a platter of cinnamon bread.

The next afternoon, Cary, Mom and I arrived in Astoria with about an hour and a half before needing to be at Nigel's graduation and decided to stop for lunch. As you enter Astoria from the south, The Ship Inn Restaurant is on your left and it looked as if it would do just fine.

They were not super busy when we arrived, and we got a table by the long window that goes across the back of the restaurant. This was our view:

That long bridge crosses The Columbia River and takes you into Washington.

The boardwalk is actually where the trolley runs from one end of Astoria to the other.

Our food was really good, and it averaged around $11.00 per plate:

Mom had the butterfly shrimp.

The interior reminded me of a nautical 1980's look, which is probably when the joint was built.
It turns out that we could have waited to eat when we got to The Job Corps, because the students had prepared a fine feast of finger foods, but I forgot to take pictures of it.
After we were all done with the graduation, we took Nigel out to lunch at his favorite place to go, the Rogue Brewery at Pier 38. Located in an building that was previously a Bumble Tuna Cannery, it now houses other businesses.

There was a lot to look at inside this place. It was a store as well as a place to eat and drink. Pretty interesting for taking photos.

I forgot to take pictures of our food! Cary wasn't hungry, but Nigel had chicken strips, Mom had a bowl of clam chowder and I had steamer clams. The food was fine, but if I had been really hungry, those clams wouldn't have filled me up. The average price was around $10 per person. Our bartender/server was great!

Buoy's Best is on the south end of town, and is located next to a seafood market. This place was not very fancy, and you eat with plastic forks, but this was the best food of all. It was so fresh, the helpings were generous and the price was cheap.

The river was high and this was the view outside the deck. There was a boy around 10 who was right down on the water hanging onto a tree and leaning over. It scared Cary, so, he said, "Hey, kid, can you swim? Because that water is cold fast and deep, and if you fall in, I'm not going in after you." They boy said that he could swim, but he took the hint and backed off.

Mom and I had deep fried prawns, and Cary had the best muscles he had ever had. Too bad that I didn't get a picture of them. Sorry, Gloria, I'm getting better, but when the food comes, I just start eating!
After getting back to Eugene, we dropped Mom off at her house and stopped by The 5th Street Grill. I had my favorite hamburger when we were there, and here is the picture of it:

So, if you ever in the neighborhood of any of these places, keep them in mind if you are hungry.

Another great post about Astoria. I love that place. We've never eaten anywhere but Baked Alaska. We love the view and the food there but perhaps we'll try one of these next time. Thanks for the info.

ReplyDeleteWe go through Astoria when we go to our family beach cabin at Rockaway Beach. We love the tuna fish and chips at the little boat take out place that I can't say the name of right now. It's across from the Maritime Museum. Also we like The Wet Dog and Astoria Brewing Co. pub. We didn't know about the Rogue Brewing Co. We'll have to check it out. We're heading that way in a couple of weeks.

I think I have said this before one state or two that I love to visit is Oregon and Washington. Seems like you have mountains, ocean close by and that is what I like. ^_^ Love your photos and yes the food. Did I see pink bottles is it beer or pop? Thanks for the bday greeting I am getting there! Hehehe! Happy Wednesday!

I don't know if I should thank you or curse you because I am now completely starving and I want ALL OF THAT FOOD!! Great job on not only my food pics request, but of all of your other photos too.
