The Dreaded Scotch Broom:
My Grandma T. hated, really, really hated Scotch Broom. She said, "It's taking over the valley." Whenever she saw it on a distant hill, she would just say, "That damn Scotch Broom. It doesn't belong there. It is a weed."
Grandma T. died nearly 11 years ago, and she would seriously be upset about how much of it there is now. The Scotch Broom really jumped out at me this past weekend when we were doing the cemetery hop. It is all over the place in the Willamette Valley.
“Some people may look at the golden hillsides resulting from Scotch broom and think it’s a pretty wildflower that belongs in (the Pacific Northwest). That’s the farthest thing from the truth. Scotch broom costs the state of Oregon about $47 million each year by its impact on natural resources, particularly on timber production.”

But, it takes over whatever is in it's path. It truly is invasive. I took these pictures at the Analauf/Compton cemetery near Curtain, Oregon.
The photo below was taken at the Yoncalla Cemetery. The Scotch broom is right outside of it, on the neighboring property:
And, this is the worse to me, it is right inside the small graveyard on top of the knoll at the tree farm in Hardscrabble. Right there! Boy would Grandma T. be annoyed at the nerve of it. If we don't spend time getting rid of it, it will eventually consume that little cemetery. Hopefully the people that live there and operate the tree farm will remove it, or their trees could be at risk, I would think.
See the pretty red plant? Poison Oak. It isn't only ghosts that we have to watch out for anymore, I guess.
The Scotch broom is back a bit behind the girls in orange.
You can see it across the road from the barn here. Please do what you can to help remove this obnoxious weed if you come across it. The links at the top of this page will let you know just how you can help. It usually needs to be dug out, because it contains a creosote type of substance that makes burning it yucky.

Drain, Oregon's Historic Homes #2: "The Drain Castle"

The "Drain Castle" was built by Charles Douglas "Charley" Drain and his wife Anna Kent Drain. Construction began in 1893 and the home was completed in 1895, costing $2,600 to build. The home is listed in the National Register of Historic Buildings. It is a home designed by architect George F. Barber, and the plans for the home were ordered by catalog.
Charley Drain was the son of Charles Drain and Nancy Gates Ensley Drain. Charles and Nancy had arrived in Oregon via wagon train in 1852, and Charley was born in Drain in 1861. The town was named Drain when Charles, Sr. and his older son John, donated 60 acres of land for the railroad to build upon. After he was grown, Charley became partners in the family mercantile business with his father and brother.

I did get a picture of Charley and Anna's headstone when we were at the Drain Cemetery on Memorial Day Weekend, 2011. Charley died young in 1910 due to a hunting accident when he was only 39 or 40. Anna, however, lived in this house until only a few months prior to her death at the age of 96, in 1959.

This one is quite grand. It belongs to John and Lucy Krewson Drain. They both died in 1891, and left behind six young children. Charley and Anna took them in to raise as their own.

Drain, Oregon's Historic Homes #1: "The Hasard House"

Please allow me to introduce you to John and Myra Wagner Hedrick of Drain, Oregon. They are my great-great Uncle and Aunt. John's parents are John and Louisa Hedrick, and John is brother to my great-grandfather Ben Hedrick.

John and Myra are buried in the North Drain Cemetery. John was born in 1866 and died in 1937. Myra was born in 1873 and died in 1957:

The Hassard House was built in 1902, but not by John and Myra. The photo below is of John and Myra in another home that they owned prior, where they rented out cabins near the intersection that "y"'s in town. After John died, Myra bought the Hassard House and used it as a boarding house for awhile, and at one point in time this home was the local funeral parlor.
My Grandma Florence Hedrick Traylor, Uncle John Hedrick and Uncle Homer Hedrick (Ben and Litha's kids) used to run around and play in the very yard of both homes when they were little.

Memorial Day Weekend: Annual Pioneer Cemetery Hop
One of our family traditions is put flowers on the graves of our family members on Memorial Day Weekend. On Saturday, we go to the Drain area and visit the 7 pioneer cemeteries where our ancestors are. Whoever can make it does, and always my Mom and her two sisters, Mardy and Sondy are there. Guys are welcome, but they are infrequent. After they grow up, they usually drop out of this special event.
I left Mayberry at 10:45. I stopped by work first, getting some gas money and a kiss from my Cary. I drove the two hours to Springfield and picked up Casey at his daycare, and then went over to my friend Sandy's house.
Sandy and I haven't seen each other for probably 10 years. It was so nice to catch up! I love that lady. Casey was good, even though he was pretty bored. We visited for over 3 hours. Mike came home near the end, and Casey took our picture.
When Kari and Kristin got home from work, we went back home. Isn't their yard pretty? I couldn't get enough of the lush greenness of the valley, even though it rained the whole time so I was reminded what it takes to get it looking so pretty.
We visited, watched "Modern Family", and Kari made us a yummy dinner.
You take biscuit dough from the store, put one slice in each muffin pan spot, put a cube of cheese in the bottom, fill it with meat filling and then bake. Easy, yummy and creative!
We also watched Casey's school musical that they performed last week about Lewis and Clark. Boy, it was so well done! I was really impressed. Casey was singing the songs and doing all the motions as we watched the video, you could tell that he really enjoyed it. Kudo's to that music teacher. Casey told me that the CD cost $15.00, because it was very rare.
In the morning, Casey went out into the rain and cut a bunch of flowers to put on the graves. He is quite helpful and gets stuck with lots of jobs that we don't really feel like doing.
Those of us from Eugene met at Mom's and drove to our first stop, Fir Grove Cemetery in Cottage Grove. Here is our route: Cottage Grove, Analauf, North Drain, Drain, Yoncalla Pioneer Cemetery, Hardscrabble (inside the tree farm) and Tin Pot (Putnam Valley).
Mom brings extra flags just in case, for the veterans. The cemetery peeps are good about putting flags on the graves, but sometimes they miss somebody.
I still think that my sister resembles Sarah Palin. See that little video camera in her hand? She was doing a documentary. On us.
Our part of the group got there early. We walked around, shared the stories and took pictures and notes.
We stop in Drain and go to the store. This year, we did a photo shoot in front of this awesome old house. It used to belong to Great-Great Aunt Myra and Great-Great Uncle John Hedrick. For awhile, Aunt Myra used it as a boarding house and then later it was a funeral home for a while. I'm going to do a whole separate post on it soon.
After leaving Drain, we went to the Yoncalla Pioneer Cemetery and ate lunch.
Done with that stop, we drove to the tree farm in Hardscrabble. This is a 600 acre ranch that John and Louisa Hedrick homesteaded in the mid-1800's. It is now a working tree farm, and we have permission to go in and visit the graves there each year.
See the red plant behind my hand? Posion Oak. I hope nobody will break out with a rash.
We are training up the next generation, just as we were trained up.
Julie made a video of the day, and will be posting it on her blog as soon as she's done editing it. It is going to be so cool, and I'll post the link to it when it's up.

This as we were getting rained on and leaving the very last cemetery, Tin Pot (Putnam Valley). Then we hopped in our cars and drove back home. It was a wonderful day!
