Soda Creek: Restoration Results After The 1966 Flood

Last month, on my drive along the Cascade Lakes Highway near Bend, Oregon, I stopped at Soda Creek Campground at Sparks Lake.  Soda Creek is beautiful and pristine, with a view of South Sister ...

Unless you knew (and I did not, until I read these plaques), you would never guess that this stream had been reconstructed by people and computer programs in 1996, after a devastating flood in 1966 ruined the original Soda Creek.  On October 7, 1966, a glacier from one of the unnamed lakes on Broken Top melted into the lake, creating the tidal wave that flooded Soda Creek in a severe way.

I became fascinated with learning more.  There is some info out there, but this article from The Ore Bin, a publication of the State of Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries does a great job of summing things up.  I enlarged these for easier reading; just slide the bar at the bottom of the page to see the rest:

That's really neat! I had never even thought of a flood happening that way.

Thank you, Mama Z! Me either. I just found this so interesting.

Fascinating, Kathy. I still think the state of Oregon needs to put you on their payroll. :)

Thanks, Lisa. Maybe they will if they are ever able to hire anybody again. It is so pretty and varied here; I feel very blessed to live here, that is for sure.

Check this stuff out below:

The 2012 Army All-American Day Event

Photo Source: Nike "The Opening Brochure" Pages 2 and 3
During the week of July 5-9, 2011, Cary and I were privileged to attend "The Opening", watching quarterback grandson Tyler Matthews (#43 the first day, and #15 on game days) play with 150 of the best high school football players in the United States. The event was held at Nike World Headquarters in Beaverton, Oregon. I hope that you enjoy the pictures ... some are better photos than others, but I tried to capture as many kids as I could.

There are approximately 500 photos in these slide shows. They are of the players, the fans, our family and everybody/everything that caught my eye. They are in chronological order. No names are on the pictures, even if I do know who people were.

As time permits, I will also be writing blog posts about my experience as a spectator. Since I still have a lot to learn about football and this is not a sports blog, I'll write some human interest stories as seen through my eyes. That said, Tyler Matthews, YOU ROCK!!!!
