The Rustic Skillet: Rainbow, Oregon

Oregon Gifts of Comfort and Joy ~ Kathy Matthews

When we are in Rainbow, Oregon on the upper McKenzie River, we always go to our favorite little diner, The Rustic Skillet.  In fact, this is usually where we eat most of our meals.  Sometimes, on the way back from Salem, we will drive an extra half hour out of our way just to visit with our friends there. This place runs like a well-oiled machine, and the staff never tells you no.  You can order a huge variety of fantastic dishes for very reasonable prices, and their service is wonderful.

Tom is the daytime cook and the owner.  He has the knack, the touch and a love for preparing great food.

You can eat inside or outside.

This is our friend Sage, our server.  She is the best!  We have gotten to know each other over the years and we just love her.  Sage can wait on the whole restaurant by herself, if need be.  The other servers are great too.

There are always daily specials that are yummy.  The just move the sign from table to table as you sit down, so that you can really study the offerings.

Sage helps Cary with his order.  He had a hankering for fresh trout, and she suggested trout and eggs.  There are all kinds of neat books by Rick Sieber's for sale, as you walk in the door.

A newer addition over the past year are the toy dinosaurs to keep you company as you eat.  I really liked the shadows that they made on the windowsill.

You can read fun stories on the placemats as you wait for your food.

My cheeseburger with fries.  Delicious!

Take a look at these homemade pies.  They also bake their own bread.

And, you can order a cocktail and have a glass of wine or a beer, if you are so inclined.

So, if you are ever in the neighborhood, please stop in and have yourself something good to eat.  Tell them that Cary and Kathy from La Pine sent you!

Oh, yum! No wonder you go out of your way to stop there. Forget the cookie-cutter national chains. These types of local restaurants are usually the best. Those pies are making me hungry!

Darn, I was quite content with my veggie dinner and now I will have to go to bed hungry.
Smart to move the sign. Saves printing menus.

Those pies....oh those pies!!! I'm once again, drooling. Wow. I'll take one of that one, and another slice of that other one...and heck, don't forget to fill me up with the other. And that's all after the fish and fries. Wowzers.

Looks like my kinda place to dine too. Those out of the way places are always so special. I can relate to that.

Thanks for visiting. And...nope, the names were William, Christian and Jacob. LOLOL Tons of 'em.

All right, I'm ready to eat at the Rustic Skillet. It looks totally awesome! I love little places like this where the food is homemade and you can get to know the people who work there.

The 2012 Army All-American Day Event

Photo Source: Nike "The Opening Brochure" Pages 2 and 3
During the week of July 5-9, 2011, Cary and I were privileged to attend "The Opening", watching quarterback grandson Tyler Matthews (#43 the first day, and #15 on game days) play with 150 of the best high school football players in the United States. The event was held at Nike World Headquarters in Beaverton, Oregon. I hope that you enjoy the pictures ... some are better photos than others, but I tried to capture as many kids as I could.

There are approximately 500 photos in these slide shows. They are of the players, the fans, our family and everybody/everything that caught my eye. They are in chronological order. No names are on the pictures, even if I do know who people were.

As time permits, I will also be writing blog posts about my experience as a spectator. Since I still have a lot to learn about football and this is not a sports blog, I'll write some human interest stories as seen through my eyes. That said, Tyler Matthews, YOU ROCK!!!!
