A to Z Challenge: "T" is for Turtle

During the month of April, I am participating in the Blogging From A-Z April 2012 Challenge, where we post everyday except for Sundays. I have decided to make flashcards for the letter of the day out of my photos, and then use the picture as a writing prompt.

I am doing something a bit different today.  I wrote the little story below in January for Book Blurb Friday, and wanted to share it instead of concentrating on the letter "t".

Thank you for your visit, and please come back again tomorrow! I'll be by to visit those who leave me comments, and also visit as many others as I can. If you like what you see, please feel free to become my newest follower. ~ Kathy M.

"Turtles Can Wait"
by Kathy Matthews

Lily T. Hunter was now ten.  Just in case you are wondering, the "T" stands for "Turtle", named after that little girl in The Bean Trees and Pigs in Heaven, her Mom's favorite books.  Lucky for those involved in her naming, Lily really did enjoy finding turtles in the pond on her grandparents property in Central Washington.

This morning, Lily packed her lunch, her turtle hunting gear and the digital camera that she had gotten from Santa.  She kissed her Grandma goodbye.

As she walked down the trail to the pond, Lily breathed in the scent of the pretty flowers on what she thought of as the "Fairy Bush".  She stopped, sat down and crossed her legs crisscross applesauce.  She also took out her camera.  Lily had seen fairies here before, but had never asked to take their picture.  There's a first time for everything, and the turtles could wait.

Not sure about crisscross applesauce?  We used to call it sitting Indian style.  Here is a cute video about it:

I've sat that way, but I have never heard it described as crisscross applesauce. I wonder where that name came from.

AAHH! I love these illustrations. And I sit like that all the time but have never heard it called that. I love it. Think I'll use it in conversation sometime. Just to make people smile :D
