In 1959, the State of Oregon celebrated it's 100th birthday. One of the birthday anniversary celebrations included a reenactment of coming over the Oregon Trail in covered wagons. It was called the "On To Oregon Cavalcade".
The group began their journey in Independence, Missouri on April 20, 1959 and got to Independence, Oregon on August 15, 1959. They used roads, which cut a couple of months off of their time compared to the original journey.
When the wagons were near Boardman, Oregon on Highway 30, my Great-Uncle John drove sixty miles out of his way in 90* heat to watch and take the picture of the group. He cracks me up, as he is complaining tongue-in-cheek about his sacrifice in doing so.
I wish that I knew who was driving the wagon in the last photo. The wagon cover says, "On to Drain, Gateway to the Oregon Coast". This was just such a special find, and I didn't even know anything about this until I found these photos in The Letsom Letters. Drain is where my Mom's side of the family is from.

This is just the sort of history I enjoy learning about from your blog Kathy. A wonderful find!
I love these pics. What an adventure they must have had that day. Gateway to the Oregon Coast...I've been to Oregon's coast and it is truly one of the most spectacular places on Earth.
I really enjoyed the film. Abe Lincoln was even there! Amazing.

If it weren't for the tarmac road and the white lines you could almost believe that these wagon trains were from much longer ago.
Since the photos have been carefully preserved, I think it was worth it to go out of the way to get the photos. The notes on the back add to the interest.
I was wondering about Drain from your other post, I like the title "gateway to the Oregon coast" because I have a postcard in the shape of Oregon, and yes it has a picture of the coast on the front. Your uncle's comment is so funny, guess that would be the thoughts of the pioneers as well, LOL.
Yes, you always give us a fine introduction to the history of your part of the world. Fascinating material.
Covered wagons, too cool! On to drain....what history you unfold for us! Thanks
Oh somewhere in my collection I have some more current wagon trains in CA. Thanks for stirring my memory. Do you know why the town is named "Drain"?
That 'On to Drain' wagon is great!
