Oregon Gifts of Comfort and Joy ~ Kathy Matthews

"Angel's Rest"
by Charles Davis
c. 2006

Another good book!  This one didn't take me very long to finish because it was interesting and it kept me engaged.

The story is told through the eyes of Charlie York, the 11-year-old son of the mayor of Sunnyside, Virginia.  When Charlie's mother is jailed for the shooting of his father, she asks longtime family friend Lacy to take care of Charlie.  This all happens in 1967, and there is still abundant racial prejudice in rural Virginia.  Lacy is a black man in his 80's and the Yorks are a white family.  So, there is that part.

To top things off, a scary man named Hollis Thrasher (who owns most of the property on the local mountain called Angel's Rest) is somehow involved in the situation.  There is plenty to figure out, and the book is full of surprises.  It is all about detail and description, friendship, sacrifice and love.

This is Mr. Davis' first novel and I really liked it.  I give it two thumbs up, for whatever that might be worth.
