This and That Tuesday News:

I won Lisa's contest!  Wow, thank you, Lisa.  I look forward to getting my Thanksgiving gifts in the mail.  At our Thanksgiving  meal in Eugene, one of the things that I am in charge of is decorations, and these will be fun to add to the mix.  But I think that I will keep the candy at home for us.

Bragging on those Grandkids

Tyler's end of the season stats:

Tyler, during his junior year at McPherson High as quarterback.....passed for 2671 yards with a 74.4% completion rate....30 passing touchdowns and 1 rushing touchdown,  with only 3 interceptions.

Tyler has the top pass rating and completion rate in the nation for the class of 2012.  Needless to say, this whole family and a couple of towns are very proud of him!

*** News Alert!  Randy just called and said that Tyler was chosen as all league, and is the MVP for offense in the whole league.  Wow.

Cameron, Tyler's brother is also a very talented football player.  We are keeping our eyes on that boy too.  All of you Kansas kids are great all around people.

Garrett:

Our grandson Garrett is kind of under recognized on my blog.  His Mom and Dad are not on Facebook, so I don't have as many easy pictures and up-to-date info on him like I do the rest of the kids.  We learned last week that Garrett, a 9th grader and a defensive back, has been placed on the varsity football team at his high school in Washington.  Way to go, Garrett!  Grandpa and I love you very much, and are so proud of you.

Chase:

Our Grandson Chase is an avid and excellent soccer player.  Way to go, guy.  Love you lots!

Chase fans out there ... you may have noticed
that he got his hair cut.  Lookin' good, Chase!

Johnny:

Then there is Johnny.  Grandpa Cary reincarnated.  Johnny is #4 on his football team.

Your new glasses look great on you, Johnny!

Collin:

Collin is an awesome basketball and baseball player.  I will be getting some basketball photos of Collin posted on here after his game this weekend.  Collin is a team leader and it is so fun to watch him play.  We can't wait to go and visit our Washington family soon.

So there you go.  I took a little liberty of doing some sports bragging on here.  Thanks for visiting!

Reflecting back over the week ...

Man, what a busy week.  Okay, there is the obvious stuff ... coming home, posting all those trip photos, organizing a contest, catching up on laundry, getting the outside critters fed and watered, etc.  That stuff is to be expected, and was actually enjoyable.

But we had some very traumatic things happen too, like Cody dying.  It is so hard to see your child heartbroken.  The neighbor man who lived next door to us as I was growing up, my friend's father, died this week too.  Our long time family friend, Pauline, also passed away (she was in her late 90's, and she and her husband were best friends with my grandparents).  My step-mom's sister, Joanna, died too.  The baby deer who eats and drinks from our bird feeder showed up by herself, and I am wondering where her mom is.  Everytime I turn around, somebody is dying on me.  It sucks.

There were some other things that happened that will not be discussed on here, but were/are worrisome, and take lots of prayer and energy to deal with.  It is so hard to watch those you love have difficulties.

My sweetie has a bad case of that flu/cold that is going around, and I feel so sorry for him.  I am trying my best to not succumb to that dang bug myself.  Right now, I am as faithful about taking my little pink antihistamine pills and Muconex tablets as others are about taking their birth control pills.

Lots of good things have happened too, though.  Tyler's team won again on Friday, and they are still undefeated for the season.  Grandboys Garrett, Cameron, Casey, Johnny, and Collin, are all playing football right now too.  The Oregon Ducks won a difficult game against Stanford.  Felix Hernandez of the Seattle Mariners won the Cy Young pitching award.  The Yankees are going into the playoffs, which is never a surprise, but I don't really mind.  At least I know who the players are.  The Red Sox are not going, and that makes me sad.  They have been there every year since I have  watching baseball, which really isn't that long.  Regular season is over, and I will miss watching baseball on t.v., which I find to be very peaceful.

More good things: I have two new followers, my friend Shelly from Creswell, and Natasha at 5 Minutes Just for Me.  Natasha lives in Australia and has an awesome blog, so make sure you take a look!

There are even more good things:  I have a wonderful husband, wonderful parents, wonderful kids and grand kids and a wonderful huge extended family.  My dogs are healthy and fine. I am blessed with so many great friends.  I am feeling happy and content right now, for these few moments.  Thank you, Lord, for your love and for your many blessings!

Every cloud has a silver lining, you guys.  Remember that!  Hey, look, here is proof:

Please click on these to enlarge for better viewing.

Mayberry has great clouds, but I am beginning to think that you can't beat Kansas clouds, no matter how hard you try.  I took these two while I was in Kansas.  Plus, if you look closely at the bottom one, you might see something looking right back at you (after you enlarge it).

I hope that you guys all have a wonderful week!

P.S. -  Here is another really cool thing that has happened recently.  Our great-nephews, those competitive BMX racing boys, went to the state championships the weekend before last.  Their efforts resulted in them placing for their age groups for the whole state:

Treavor came in 3rd (age 13)

Christian came in 7th (age 12)

Jason came in 6th (age 9)

Isaiah came in 7th (age 6)

When the boys are not busy racing, they try
to keep their Mom and Dad out of jail:

What did you two do this time, Brian and Shelly?

You have great boys and we are so proud of them!

Tyler's Team Still Undefeated!

Our Kansas grandson Tyler Matthews and the McPherson Bullpups are still undefeated, putting them at 3-0 for the season.  Last night's win came with a score of McPherson 46 and Andover Central 7.  Tyler has already thrown over 800 yards so far this year.  To read more about the game, check out these articles from  Varsity Kansas.com and Catch it Kansas.

Grandpa Cary said something like this, "Listening to the games on the radio is great, but next week we are going to watch Tyler play (and Halie cheer) in person."    Yay!  To make it even more exciting, they are playing against Tyler's old school, Goddard.   It is also HomecomingSo, stay tuned for a bunch of pictures on all of that.

These photos were taken by Larry W. Smith from the Wichita Eagle.

Tyler is not the only football star of Team Matthews Kansas!  Cameron is also having a great season.  Cameron is wearing the lucky number 13, which just happens to be the number that his Grandpa Cary was when he was a high school quarterback way back when.

Way to go, Cameron, we are very proud of you and look forward to watching you play too.

Family/Sports: Star Quarterback Tyler Matthews

September 2010:

Last night's football game was a family affair.

Our grandson Tyler played his first game at his new school last night as the starting quarterback and he was remarkable.  Tyler threw 5 touchdown passes and his team won the game by a large margin.

There are some really neat things about this game that won't make headline news, but that I am very happy about anyway.  First, we got to listen to the whole game via KBBE 96.7, in McPherson, Kansas.  We were sitting on our front porch with Grandma Darlene, listening to the announcers get so excited about Tyler and his teammates.  I was texting Mother Jennifer (who took all the photos below) and Aunt Shanna in Washington.  Shanna and John soon turned the game on at their house, so we were all involved.  Cary called Randy everytime Tyler threw another touchdown pass, which seemed like every 5 minutes; driving Randy crazy.  It was so fun!

Another highlight is that Jennifer's grandmother, who lives in Oregon, was there to watch the game too.  She had not seen the kids for a long time, and I can only imagine how she was bursting with pride over everything she was getting to see in person last night.

I am so jealous!  I wanted to be there sitting next to
them and I think Cary feels the same way.

The Game:

"Coach Young is a great coach and we have a good group of guys and this is a good start to what I think is going to be a good year," Matthews said. "We were just clicking tonight and the line blocked, the receivers got open æ.æ.æ. everything was perfect."

This was the score when Tyler left the game and they gave others a chance to play.  The final score was 52-27.

Halie is in the middle.  I texted Jen and asked how Halie was doing, and she replied: "Halie is BEAUTIFUL!"  Yes, she is.

McPherson beats Andover behind Tyler Matthews' five passing TDs

Published Sep. 3 at 11:50 p.m. | Last updated Sep. 4 at 2:45 a.m.

McPHERSON — This time last season, McPherson quarterback Tyler Matthews was buried on the bench at Goddard.

Not until the second half of the season did Matthews find the field, and he wound up throwing for more than 1,000 yards.

When his dad took a job in McPherson after football season, Matthews transferred and began studying coach Tom Young's playbook, in anticipation of becoming the Bullpups' quarterback.

After throwing for 296 yards, five touchdowns and completing 85 percent of his passes (17 of 20) in McPherson's 52-27 victory over Andover on Friday night, Matthews better get ready to hear the comparisons with Joel Piper, last year’s quarterback who has moved on to Butler Community College.

"Coach Young is a great coach and we have a good group of guys and this is a good start to what I think is going to be a good year," Matthews said. "We were just clicking tonight and the line blocked, the receivers got openæ.æ.æ. everything was perfect."

Matthews' primary targets, Nick Gawanda and Christian Ulsaker, benefited greatly from Matthews' quick delivery.

Often times the Bullpups’ standout receivers hadn't even turned their heads on their routes and the ball was already there.

Gawanda finished with five catches for 118 yards and three touchdowns, while Ulsaker had eight receptions for 108 yards and a score.

"I compare him a lot to Joel (Piper)," Ulsaker said. "Tyler's ball jumps the last 10 yards and that's something we didn't have last year."

To make matters worse for opponents, McPherson has a lethal running game too.

Kevin O'Connor ran for 132 yards and two touchdowns and also caught a shovel pass from Matthews and ran it in from 44 yards.

"We were pretty sharp, and in fact, I was surprised how well we executed," Young said. "We've got pretty good balance and we're fortunate to have that talent."

The sight was all too familiar for Andover coach Mike Lee.

One year ago his team lost by the exact score at Buhler, and just like Friday night, gave up yard after yard.
"I don't think any team can match up with McPherson," Lee said. "That is a very, very good team."
The Trojans appeared to have something going in the early stages of the game. Ben Croitoru ran the first play from scrimmage 67 yards for a touchdown, and then the Trojans added a receiving touchdown from Caleb Windholz early in the second quarter to take a 14-12 lead.

The Bullpups responded by scoring touchdowns on six of their next seven series.

To make matters even worse for the Trojans, Croitoru, who rushed for 1,490 yards last season, left the game with a knee injury.

"I'm going to try and be an optimist about it, but it doesn't look good," Lee said. "We are already starting to think where we go from here."

This just in -- the new kid isn’t too shabby.

There was much curiosity here Friday night surrounding the debut of McPherson High junior quarterback Tyler Matthews, a transfer from Goddard who was stepping into the oversized shoes of Shrine Bowler Joel Piper.

Talk about your first impressions. All Matthews did before an overflow McPherson Stadium crowd was pierce a good Andover team for 304 yards and five touchdowns to key a 52-27 victory.  Matthews was 10 of 13 for 210 yards and four touchdowns in the first half alone, as MHS shook off a couple of early deficits to lead 25-14, then added 20 points in the third quarter to break it open.

“Well, maybe not quite that good,” MHS coach Tom Young said when asked if he thought Matthews would be that good. “He really played well. Of course our receivers really caught the ball well and we protected well for most of the time.”

Matthews finished the game a pinpoint 17 of 20, as he hit on all seven of his second-half pitches. He retired after the first series of the fourth quarter.  As expected, the MHS receivers were a handful. Nick Gawanda had five catches for 122 yards, including TDs of 29, 64 and 14 yards. Christian Ulsaker latched on to eight passes for 99 yards and a 23-yard touchdown, while Kevin O’Connor turned a shovel pass into a 44-yard TD sprint.

O’Connor augmented the passing game by churning for 133 yards on 18 carries, literally attacking the Trojan defense with fearless abandon. He had three touchdowns, two on the ground. Seth Davenport scored the other rushing TD from five yards out.  MHS finished with 475 yards, most of that in the first three quarters.
“A lot of the 7-on-7 stuff you have in the summer anymore is huge,” Young said. “It gives you an advantage to work on the passing game.”

The MHS defense was shaky early, as Ben Croitoru scored on the first play of the game on a 67-yard sprint and Andover took a second lead early in the second quarter on a 9-yard Jordan Jones to Caleb Windholz pass. Unfortunately for the Trojans, Croitoru was injured late in the first half and did not return, robbing Andover of its top home-run hitter. He had 105 yards in the first quarter and finished with 110. “He’s a real fine back and it hurt them when we went out,” Young said. “When he gets out in the open, it’s all over. Andover is a fine football team and very physical.”

It was all Bullpups after Croitoru went out, as the Trojans didn’t do anything else offensively until Young cleared the bench.

The Bullpups now turn their attention to Salina South, which defeated Campus 29-18 Friday night. That game also will be at McPherson Stadium and the Cougars are thought to have the talent to return to prominence.
