Recent Reads: Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings~"The Yearling"

Source:  Bing Images

Oh, my.  I just finished reading "The Yearling", by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, c.1938.  I barely remember reading it when I was young and I am so happy that I read it again.  I think that everybody should.  This is literature.  It is a classic.  It is meaty, and captures the language and times of rural Florida back in the old days.

The story is about a boy, Jody Baxter, and his family and neighbors.  Jody wants a pet very much, and eventually through a twist of fate, he becomes the guardian of a baby deer.  The story spans one year, and a lot of things happen during that time period.  I highly recommend reading this book or reading it again.

The version that I bought for $2.00 at St. Vinnies was a Reader's Digest copy (though it was a full book, and not condensed).  Inside the book was the following insert that tells all about Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings and how she came to write this wonderful novel.  I scanned it and enlarged it for easier reading.

Enjoy!

This is one I've never read. I'm hitting old books though, so I'll add it to my list.

It was a favorite of mine. I visited her home near Micanopy Fl and was facinated by her life. She was a very interesting person.

Lisa, I know that you will love it. Talk about showing instead of telling, she is the master of that art.

Patti, is her home a museum now? How cool is that. Have you read her other books? She sounds very interesting and down to earth.
