In a past life, she was married to a man who made his living for a while as a foreign fisheries biologist. Essentially, he was a fish cop. The government hired him to live on fishing ships from other countries to observe and make sure that they were not breaking any rules. If they accidentally caught a baby seal in one of their nets, that would be duly noted and a proper fine assessed.
On one of his voyages, he was well-liked by the captain of a Japanese vessel. Upon his departure (and perhaps to smooth the sails toward a good report), the captain sent him home with a lovely kimono for his wife, along with an inlayed abalone shell candy dish. (I would show you the dish, but upon his wife leaving him, he turned Indian-giver and took both the kimono and the dish away from her. Along with all of her daycare toys, including tons of vintage Fisher Price, but that is another story for another day.)
Anyway, she had that dress for many years. She took it to her son's show-and-tell when he was in kindergarten. She wore it on halloween to the grange hall, along with a Jar-Jar Binks mask, which freaked everybody out because they didn't know who she was. Her husband had a matching mask. The Binks couple were shunned by other party guests ... until they took off the masks because they became very sweaty on the inside.

She just came across a picture of herself wearing the fancy Asian dress last weekend when sorting through a box of old photos, and thought that you might like to see it.

I really enjoyed this post. What a terrible shame to lose such a special item, thank heavens for photos! Why do splits have to be so acrimonious. And all those FP toys too!
What a stunning dress! I'm so glad you do at least have the photos.
She clearly went on to better things though ;) It's a nice to have the photo and the happy memories but perhaps it's just as well that the dress itself is no longer liable to fall out of a wardrobe and surprise her!
I don't miss the dress very much, but I still really miss my toys. :>)
