San Antonio Trip:

The Reason:

We are way excited to be spending the weekend with the Kansas grand-kids, and their parents in San Antonio, Texas.

Tyler, the sophomore quarterback I have been bragging about on here, has been invited to the National All Star Game.  They invite the top 500 high school football stars in the nation to the game.  90 of the upperclassmen divide into two teams of 45 each and play each other.  Everybody invited gets a chance to show the college scouts what they are made of, for future reference.

In addition, Cameron, our 8th grade quarterback, will be playing in a game on Sunday, so we will get to see him play.

Here are some of the things about San Antonio that we will be doing, along with website links.  There will be lots of pictures to post when we return.  I think I am going to need an extra memory card for at least one of my cameras.

"U.S. Army All-American Bowl Week also includes the U.S. Army Coaches Academy, U.S. Army National Combine, and U.S. Army All-American Awards Dinner. The U.S. Army Coaches Academy features 100 of the nation’s top coaches, including the head coach of each All-American. The Coaches Academy includes coaching seminars and an on-field clinic, featuring NFL and NCAA clinicians. The U.S. Army National Combine is a three-day event that features 500 of the nation’s top underclassman football players. Athletes participate in measurable skills activities, one-on-one drills, and educational seminars. The U.S. Army All-American Awards Dinner is the nation’s largest high school football awards dinner with more than 1,300 attendees, and includes the U.S. Army Player of the Year trophy presentation.http://www.visitsanantonio.com/index.aspx

The Riverwalk:

Here is a picture of the River Walk.  Unlucky for us, this will be the week that they drain the river for maintenance.  This means we will not be floating down the river, but we can still walk on the paths and enjoy the museums and restaurants along the way. There is also a channel of the river that runs right through our hotel.  Too bad, we will also miss the Mud Festival.  Oh, well.

River Walk Draining
1/03/2010 - 1/12/2010
"Held for one week in January to celebrate the draining of the San Antonio River for maintenance by the Parks & Recreation Department. This year the City of San Antonio Parks and Recreation Department has scheduled the draining of the River from January 3-12.

The actual Mud Festival is held after the River is filled back up. Civic & Media personalities vie for the title of the Michelob Ultra Mud Queen & Mud King by competing to see who can raise the most quarter votes for the Association. The celebration features: Michelob Ultra Mud Pie Ball, Michelob Ultra Mud Coronation, Michelob Ultra Mud Parade, and an Arts & Crafts Show."  http://www.thesanantonioriverwalk.com/

Weather Report:

Oh, no, I guess we'll feel right at home in San Antonio.  I'll just wear my winter coat and my leather boots like I always do at home.  The bummer is that there might even be freezing rain during the game.  Dang!  I guess we will not be swimming on the roof top pool.  I'll just go up there and take a bunch of pictures instead.

COLDER WEATHER COMING LATER THIS WEEK...

AN EARLY JANUARY ARCTIC OUTBREAK IN WAKE OF AN ARCTIC COLD FRONT THURSDAY MORNING WILL BRING THE COLDEST WEATHER SO FAR THIS WINTER AND COLDER THAN THE PAST FEW WINTERS ON THURSDAY THROUGH SATURDAY.

THE UNSEASONABLY COLD WEATHER IS EXPECTED TO CONTINUE THROUGH SUNDAY OF NEXT WEEKEND.

A SLIGHT CHANCE OF RAIN... MIXED WITH FREEZING RAIN... SLEET OR SNOW IS POSSIBLE THURSDAY MORNING WITH THE ARCTIC COLD FRONT... OVER THE HILL COUNTRY TO ADJACENT PARTS OF CENTRAL AND SOUTH CENTRAL TEXAS.

DRY AND COLD CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED TO FOLLOW THURSDAY AFTERNOON THROUGH FRIDAY AND CONTINUE NEXT WEEKEND. OVERNIGHT TEMPERATURES ON THURSDAY NIGHT... FRIDAY NIGHT... AND SATURDAY NIGHT WILL FALL BELOW FREEZING FOR SEVERAL HOURS. THESE HARD FREEZES MAY BE SIGNIFICANT ENOUGH TO DAMAGE TENDER VEGETATION AND EXPOSED PIPES.
